How to Save Your Pet from Theft

The most obvious way to save your pets from theft is not to keep them alone. If you have your pet within your view, or if you secure them in your home/yard, you are good to go. However, it is not always possible as situations are not always the same.

In this article, you will learn how to save your pet from theft. Here, you will learn how to protect your pet and prevent a loss.

Steps to Save Your Pet from Theft

Steps to Save Your Pet from Theft

The following are the steps you must take to ensure your pet does not get stolen:

1. Don’t Leave Your Pet in Public

One of the major causes of pet theft is leaving the pet unattended. Hence, you must think twice if you tie up your dog/cat outside a shop. Even if you leave your pet for a few minutes, there is a risk of theft.

Basically, there are always some heartless thieves who are looking for quick cash. When they find your pet in public, they will sell them quickly.

Hence, the best option is to leave your pet at home when you go out.

2. Check the Identity of the Pet Sitter

Always ask for proper identity from pet sitters. For instance, some criminals pose as pet sitters, and they take your pet from you just to sell and flee. In such cases, you need to ask for identification and certificates to trust the person.

For example, in Australia, with the ANCC crime check application, you can get details about the character of a person. Apart from that, you can also ask for a National Police Certificate from a person if you know that the individual has a criminal record.

Always be aware of strange pet care providers. Hence, before you trust your pet with some pet care provider, make sure to do your research. Also, check for reviews and references and ask for identification. In fact, it is best to ask your neighbors/friends/family to recommend you a pet sitter.

3. Secure Your Yard

If strangers can see and access your yard, it can be risky for your pet, too. Hence, you must only leave your pet alone in the yard if it is fully secure. For instance, you can keep strong locks on the gates and keep garage gates locked as well.

Moreover, if you have a dog, you can train your dog to bark when there is an unknown person in your yard.

4. Keep Doors Locken When You Go Out

When you go out of your home, make sure to lock all your doors and windows. Moreover, keep your pets safe and secure inside. Also, ensure thieves cannot see your pet from the outside. Additionally, you can keep pet doors for your pet. However, it can still be risky. On the other hand, you can also consider keeping a security alarm for your home.

5. Go Out for a Walk at Different Times

When you go out for a walk with your pet, thieves might observe you for a few days. They are always looking for ways to snatch your pet and flee. Basically, you must make sure that the thieves in the area do not get familiar with your routine.

6. Do Not Overshare Your Pet’s Information

Of course, a stranger might ask a few questions about your pet. However, beware of such strangers who ask too many questions or pay too much attention to your dog. Also, be careful what you post about your pet on social media platforms.

Even though you are sharing pictures of your pet on social media, make sure to take pictures in such a way that your followers do not get information about where you live. This will put both your pet and yourself at risk.

7. Maintain Your Pet’s ID

One of the ways to ensure the safety of your pet is to microchip your pet’s ID. Here, make sure to register that ID with the local council and ensure that the details are up-to-date. Also, make sure that your pet is wearing a collar and an ID tag (along with your phone number) when you go out.

On the other hand, you can also consider using a tracking device with your pet by attaching it to the collar. In fact, there are apps that you can link it through your phone.

Wrapping Up

Always prepare for the worst. Suppose your pet is stolen. In that case, you must calm your nerves and immediately report it to the Police and your local council. Also, you can check “found pets” listings on rescue organizations. Moreover, you must inform everyone you know (even on social media) along with a picture of your pet.
